About

The National Super League 4-Day Tournament represents the highest tier of provincial cricket in Sri Lanka. It operates as a parallel structure to the club-focused Major League Tournament, featuring five district teams rather than individual clubs. The competition was established in 2022 to replace the former Inter-Provincial First Class Tournament, positioning it as the primary pathway for players to reach the national Test squad. The participating sides—Colombo, Dambulla, Galle, Jaffna, and Kandy—field squads drawn from the broader player pool available within the domestic system. This design ensures that the league serves exclusively as a selection mechanism for international representation.

Matches follow a double round-robin format, where each side faces every opponent twice over the course of the season. The tournament structure has evolved in recent years; earlier editions incorporated semi-finals, but the current model features a direct final contested by the top two finishers. Dambulla District has emerged as the most successful team in the competition’s history, securing victories in the 2022–23, 2025, and 2026 seasons. Kandy District claimed the inaugural title, while Galle District has won the championship twice in the last three years. There is no movement between this league and the club-based competition, as they function as distinct tiers with separate purposes.

The event is sponsored by Dialog Axiata and organized under the authority of Sri Lanka Cricket. By focusing on provincial representation rather than club affiliations, the tournament provides a concentrated environment for identifying talent capable of competing at the highest level. The five teams compete throughout the season with the ultimate goal of reaching the final match. The structure prioritizes regional diversity, ensuring that players from different parts of the country have equal opportunity to represent their home district on the field. This approach distinguishes the competition from other domestic fixtures that rely on traditional club hierarchies.
