The Ranji Trophy stands as the premier domestic first-class cricket championship in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Founded in 1934, it carries the name of Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, with the original trophy donated by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. The competition sits at the apex of the Indian domestic pyramid for multi-day cricket, distinct from the shorter formats of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Mumbai holds the record for the most titles with 42 wins, their most recent victory coming in 2023–24. The tournament structure underwent significant expansion in 2018–19, growing from 28 to 37 teams and reintroducing the Plate Group. In the 2024–25 season, the Elite Group comprised 32 teams divided into four groups of eight, while the Plate Group included five teams. Elite Group teams played a round-robin format, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals alongside the Plate Group winner. Vidarbha captured the 2024–25 title by defeating Kerala in the final, securing the trophy via a first-innings lead after the match ended in a draw.
Promotion and relegation operate between the Elite and Plate groups, though the BCCI announced a reform for 2025–26 to reduce this to a one-up, one-down system. The inaugural season in 1934–35 was won by Bombay, now Mumbai, who defeated Northern India in a timeless final. Notable individual records include B.B. Nimbalkar's highest score of 443* and V.V.S. Laxman's highest single-season run tally of 1,415.
