The Ranji Trophy Plate League operates as the second tier within India’s premier first-class cricket competition. It serves as a developmental arena for emerging state associations and smaller cricketing nations. Teams such as Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Mizoram contest in this division.
The structure was established during the 2002–03 season when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) replaced the previous zonal system with a two-tier model. The specific nomenclature of the Plate League was adopted in the 2006–07 season. Its primary function involves promotion and relegation, which defines the hierarchy of domestic cricket in the country. For the 2024–25 season, the bottom two teams from each of the four Elite Groups were relegated to the Plate Group. Conversely, the top two teams from the Plate Group advanced to the Elite Group for the following season. A rule change for the 2025–26 season will reduce this to one team promoted and one relegated.
The format of the Plate League has evolved significantly over time. In the 2024–25 season, it consisted of six teams playing a single round-robin group stage. The top two teams from this stage advanced to a final, where the winner is crowned the Plate Champion. Goa claimed the title in the most recent edition, defeating Nagaland in a final that featured a record-breaking 606-run partnership. Previous winners include Hyderabad and Meghalaya.
The competition is distinct from other domestic tournaments in its four-day match format and its role as the primary determinant of a team's tier status. Unlike the limited-overs competitions, which operate as parallel tracks, the Ranji Trophy's promotion and relegation system dictates the composition of the groups. This mechanism ensures a dynamic hierarchy, allowing teams to cycle between tiers based on performance. The league remains focused on nurturing talent within the smaller cricketing entities of India.
