About

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Established in 2006–07, the tournament originally operated under the name Inter-State T20 Championship before being renamed in 2011–12 to honour former Indian cricketer Syed Mushtaq Ali. It represents the highest level of the Indian domestic T20 hierarchy.

The competition currently features 38 teams, comprising state and regional associations that also participate in the Ranji Trophy. The structure divides these sides into five Elite Groups for a round-robin stage, followed by a knockout phase. A separate Plate Group provides a pathway for lower-ranked teams, with promotion and relegation links between the two tiers. For instance, during the 2024–25 season, Mizoram secured promotion from the Plate Group while Meghalaya faced relegation from the Elite tier.

Tamil Nadu stands as the most successful team in the tournament's history, having claimed the title three times. These victories came in 2006–07, 2020–21 and 2021–22. Other clubs with multiple wins include Karnataka, Baroda, Gujarat and Mumbai, who have each secured two titles. Jharkhand recently claimed their first championship after defeating Haryana in the 2025–26 final.

Individual performances have set notable records within the competition. Tilak Varma of Hyderabad holds the record for the highest individual score of 151 runs. Baroda once posted a team total of 349/5 against Sikkim in the same season. The tournament serves as a crucial development platform for players aiming to represent the Indian national T20 side or secure positions in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
