About

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy stands as the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in India. Organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the tournament occupies the top tier of the country's domestic T20 pyramid. It serves as the primary platform for players to gain national selection, distinct from the commercial, franchise-based Indian Premier League (IPL).

The event was first held in the 2006–07 season under the name Inter-State Twenty-20 Tournament. It received its current title in 2009–10 to honour Syed Mushtaq Ali, a legendary cricketer who was the first Indian to score a century overseas and a key figure in India's first Test victory in 1952. Teams such as Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Kerala participate alongside institutional sides. These squads also compete in the Ranji Trophy, the traditional first-class competition.

The current format involves 38 teams split into an Elite Category and a Plate Category. Teams play a round-robin within groups. The top two from each Elite group advance to a Super League, with the winner progressing to the final. The Plate group winner is promoted to the Elite division for the next season, while the bottom team from the Elite groups is relegated. This structure replaced earlier iterations, including a zonal format introduced in 2016–17 and a Super League structure added in 2012–13.

Tamil Nadu holds the record for the most titles with three wins. Jharkhand is the current holder, having won the 2025–26 edition by defeating Haryana. The competition continues to evolve, adapting its groupings to ensure competitive balance across the nation's cricketing regions.
