The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket competition in India, established in 2016 by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). Initiated by N. Srinivasan, the league operates as a state-level franchise tournament, functioning independently of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) domestic structure. It serves as a development pathway for local talent, offering visibility to national selectors and Indian Premier League (IPL) scouts.
The current edition features eight city-based franchises, including the Chepauk Super Gillies, Dindigul Dragons, and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans. The season runs for three to four weeks, typically during June and July, following a round-robin format where each team plays every opponent once. The top four sides advance to a knockout stage. Unlike some regional counterparts, the TNPL enforces a strict domestic-only player policy, prohibiting international cricketers. Squads must include a minimum number of Under-19 players registered with the TNCA and athletes from the specific districts the franchise represents. Player salaries are determined by a fixed-price band system rather than an open auction.
Competition results highlight the dominance of Chepauk Super Gillies, who have secured four titles. However, the 2025 season saw new leadership, with IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans capturing their maiden championship after defeating the Dindigul Dragons in the final. The Dindigul Dragons had claimed the previous year’s title. The tournament has seen two primary title sponsors: India Cements and Shriram Capital. Broadcast coverage includes English, Tamil, and Hindi commentary, with digital streaming available through platforms such as FanCode and the official league YouTube channel. The league operates on a closed franchise model where teams are owned by private entities that purchase rights through a bidding process conducted by the TNCA.
