Uganda in Zimbabwe 2023/24

The fixture between Uganda and Zimbabwe Under-25s in November 2023 stands as a distinct bilateral cricket series rather than a formal domestic tournament. Organised as a two-match Twenty20 (T20) programme, the encounter served as crucial preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Finals. The schedule saw the senior Uganda National Cricket Team face the Zimbabwe Under-25s select side in Harare across consecutive days.

The series delivered a split result that highlighted the competitive balance between the nations. Uganda secured victory in the opening contest, winning by nine wickets. The momentum shifted in the second game, where the hosts reclaimed the upper hand, defeating the visitors by seven wickets. This format allowed both squads to test strategies without the pressure of a full international series.

The composition of the teams reflects the different developmental structures within Zimbabwean cricket. While Zimbabwe lacks a formal domestic Under-25 league, the side functions as an ad-hoc selection for specific international events, including the African Games. This contrasts with the senior national side, which competes under the banner of Zimbabwe Cricket. The involvement of the Under-25s indicates a focus on nurturing talent for future senior duties rather than a standalone championship.

Uganda’s participation underscores their ongoing development efforts in regional cricket. The team utilises this bilateral opportunity to gain experience against varied opposition. The matches were conducted under standard T20 regulations, providing a fast-paced environment suitable for player evaluation. The outcome did not determine a permanent trophy or league title, but it offered valuable insights into the current form of both sides ahead of major continental qualifiers. The event remains a singular instance of this specific matchup, with no established history of regular encounters between these particular groups prior to 2023.
