The Vijay Hazare Trophy is the premier domestic List A tournament in India. Organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it stands as the country’s top-tier one-day competition. The event holds significance as a critical selection ground for the Indian national ODI squad.
Established in the 1993–94 season, the tournament initially operated under the name Ranji One Day Trophy. It underwent a name change in the 2002–03 season to honour former Indian captain Vijay Hazare. The structure of the competition has evolved significantly over time. Historically, the tournament utilized a zonal format. The current setup involves 38 teams divided into an Elite Division and a Plate Division. The Elite Division contains 32 teams, while the Plate Division consists of six teams. Teams in the Elite Division are split into groups, playing a single round-robin format. Top performers advance to a knockout stage featuring Pre-Quarter Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and a Final. These knockout matches are played as single-leg contests.
The Plate Division functions as a secondary tier, with promotion and relegation mechanisms linking it to the Elite Division. For instance, the winner of the Plate Division for the 2025–26 season, Bihar, earned promotion to the Elite Division for the following campaign. Competition among the leading teams is fierce. In the national championship era, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka share the record for the most titles, each securing five victories. The reigning champion is Vidarbha, who won the 2025–26 edition by defeating Saurashtra. Individual records include Narayan Jagadeesan’s highest individual score of 277 runs. The tournament remains distinct from other domestic events such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Deodhar Trophy.
