The competition serves as the primary domestic List A cricket pathway in India, determining eligibility for one-day internationals through a structured annual tournament. Founded in the 1993–94 season under the name Ranji One Day Trophy, the event was established to provide a limited-overs counterpart to the first-class Ranji Trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India administers the series, which underwent a name change in 2007–08 to honour former captain Vijay Hazare.
The modern format involves thirty-eight teams split into five groups played in a single round-robin arrangement. The top ten sides progress to a knockout phase, which begins with a preliminary quarter-final round for the lowest-ranked qualifiers to narrow the field before the main quarter-finals. This structure ensures a competitive bracket without direct promotion or relegation from other senior domestic competitions, although internal movement occurs between the Elite and Plate groups within the tournament itself.
Historical performance highlights Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as the most successful franchises, each holding five titles. Karnataka claimed the most recent championship by defeating Vidarbha in the decisive final. Individual milestones include Narayan Jagadeesan’s highest individual score of 277 and Ankit Bawne’s career total of 4,164 runs, marking significant achievements within the domestic circuit. The competition remains distinct from the T20-focused Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, cementing its role specifically for fifty-over cricket development.
