About

The Vijay Hazare Trophy stands as the premier List A cricket competition in India. Governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the tournament occupies the top tier of the domestic one-day pyramid. Established in the 1993–94 season as the Ranji One Day Trophy, it adopted the name of legendary all-rounder Vijay Hazare for the 2007–08 campaign. The competition serves as the primary selection arena for the Indian national ODI team, functioning distinctly from the first-class Ranji Trophy and the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The current structure involves 38 state and regional teams. The 2024–25 format divided participants into five groups with round-robin stages, culminating in a knockout phase that includes quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final. A new structure for the 2025–26 season reintroduces an Elite and Plate system with one-way promotion and relegation between tiers. This shift aims to balance competitive intensity across the nation’s cricketing bodies.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are the most successful teams, each holding five titles. Karnataka claimed the most recent championship by defeating Vidarbha in the 2024–25 final. Individual performances have also left their mark on the record books. Narayan Jagadeesan scored 830 runs in a single season during 2022–23, while Shivam Sharma took 21 wickets in the 2020–21 edition. The tournament does not directly qualify teams for international events but feeds into the Deodhar Trophy, which has recently shifted to a zonal format excluding the Vijay Hazare Trophy winner.
