The **Vijay Hazare Trophy** is the premier domestic List A cricket tournament in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Originally established as the Ranji One Day Trophy in the 1993–94 season, the competition was renamed in 2007–08 to honour former Indian captain Vijay Hazare. It stands as the primary one-day event in the Indian domestic structure, sitting alongside the first-class Ranji Trophy and the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The tournament features 38 teams divided into two tiers. The Elite division comprises four groups of eight teams, while the Plate Group contains six teams. Within these groups, sides play a round-robin format before the top two from each Elite group advance to knockout stages. The structure includes a promotion and relegation system between the two tiers: the Plate Group winner moves up to the Elite division for the next season, while the lowest-placed team from the Elite division drops down. This one-for-one exchange rule was implemented for the 2025–26 season.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka share the record for the most titles, each winning five editions. Karnataka claimed the most recent championship in the 2024–25 edition. Individual records include Narayan Jagadeesan’s highest List A score of 277 and Ankit Bawne’s career batting total of 4,164 runs.
The competition serves as a key trial for the Indian One Day International team. It is distinguished by its 50-over format, a 16-man squad allowance, and a 10-over powerplay, ensuring it remains distinct from other domestic tournaments. There is no promotion or relegation between the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the first-class or T20 competitions.
