The **Vijay Hazare Trophy** stands as the premier domestic List A cricket competition in India. Administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the tournament serves as the primary selection ground for the national One-Day squad. It occupies the highest tier of the country's domestic List A hierarchy, distinct from the T20-focused Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the zonal Deodhar Trophy.
Thirty-eight teams currently participate in the event, divided into five Elite Groups based on performance in the preceding season. The format features a round-robin group stage where the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout phase. The five group winners and the highest-ranked runner-up qualify directly for the quarter-finals, while the remaining four runners-up contest pre-quarter-finals.
Promotion and relegation exist between the Elite Groups and a Plate Group. Specifically, the Plate Group winner is promoted to the Elite tier, and the lowest-ranked team across all Elite groups is relegated. This structure manages the growing number of teams participating in domestic cricket.
Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are the most successful teams, each winning five titles. Karnataka, the reigning champion, holds the record for recent dominance, having won in 2013–14, 2014–15, 2017–18, 2019–20, and 2024–25. Tamil Nadu secured victories in 2002–03, 2004–05, 2008–09, 2009–10, and 2016–17. Mumbai follows with four titles.
Notable reforms include the introduction of the Plate/Elite structure to handle team expansion and the recent streamlining of promotion and relegation to a single spot in each direction starting in the 2024–25 season. The competition was inaugurated in the 1993–94 season under the name Ranji One Day Trophy and was renamed in 2007–08 to honour legendary Indian cricketer Vijay Hazare.
