About

West Africa Trophy is a regional men’s cricket tournament organized by the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF). The inaugural edition took place in Lagos, Nigeria, in October 2023. It serves as a preparatory platform for senior national teams aiming for ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cricket Championship. Matches played within the tournament are recognized as T20 Internationals (T20Is).

The competition does not fit into a domestic league pyramid and operates without a promotion or relegation system. It is distinct from the continental Africa T20 Cup, which involves teams from across Africa, including Southern and East Africa, and often features domestic franchises. The West Africa Trophy is specifically focused on West African nations. The tournament format typically involves four teams. In the 2023 edition, the participants were Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Ghana. The initial format featured a round-robin stage where each team played ten matches, followed by a final and a third-place playoff.

Nigeria is the most successful team and the current title holder, having won both the 2023 and 2025 editions. In 2023, Nigeria defeated Rwanda in the final. In 2025, the tournament was held in Abuja, with Ghana replaced by Zambia. The format shifted to a triple round-robin league, where each team played every other team three times, resulting in nine league matches. This was followed by a final and a third-place match, totaling twenty matches in the tournament. Nigeria again defeated Rwanda in the final, winning by 40 runs.

The tournament is organized by the NCF, often in collaboration with state governments and sponsors such as Dafabet and Sparkle. Information is disseminated through the NCF website and cricket databases like ESPNcricinfo. There is no standalone official website for the trophy.
