The West Indies in England tour is a bilateral cricket series rather than a standalone league or cup competition. It brings together the England and West Indies national teams for a sequence of international matches, including Tests, One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). The tour is organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) alongside Cricket West Indies (CWI). Before the main fixtures, a County Select XI plays warm-up games against the visiting side. These first-class matches serve as preparation and do not count toward the County Championship standings.
The longest-standing phase of the tour is the Test series, played for the Richards-Botham Trophy. Established in 2020, this trophy replaced the Wisden Trophy, which had been contested from 1963 to 2020. The Wisden Trophy was created by John Wisden & Co. to mark the centenary of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. The current prize honours Sir Viv Richards and Sir Ian Botham, two of the sport's most celebrated figures. England held the Richards-Botham Trophy after winning the most recent 2024 series 3-0. Historically, West Indies dominated the earlier competition, securing 12 wins compared to England's eight conquests of the Wisden Trophy.
The tour has a long history, with the first West Indies team arriving in England in 1900 for non-Test matches. The first official Test series took place in 1928. Modern schedules vary in format; while the 2024 tour focused on three Tests, the 2025 edition includes three ODIs and three T20Is. This flexibility allows the boards to adjust the balance of the series according to global cricket calendars. The County Select XI remains a constant feature, providing local players with experience against international talent.
The series represents a significant fixture in the international calendar, showcasing high-level competition between two traditional cricketing nations. The trophy names reflect the legacy of the sport, linking past achievements with present contests.
