The Cayman Islands beat Bermuda 115-113 in the North America Cup on Tuesday evening. Two sides with identical records went head-to-head and the home crowd saw their team hold on for the narrowest of victories. It ended 115-113 after what looked like a contest decided in the final moments.
Both teams sat level on the table before this match — two games played, one win, one loss, three points each. The hosts moved into second place while Bermuda stayed top after the defeat. By then the gap between them remained razor-thin at just two points in the standings.
The Cayman Islands have been close in recent outings. They beat Argentina 116-114 in March and had earlier won against Suriname 96-92. That run of tight games suggests they do not need to pull away by large margins to win.
Bermuda arrived with mixed form. A 220-74 win over the Bahamas in June looked dominant, but they had also lost 131-132 to Canada and dropped 48-45 to Belize. To be fair, their away record has not been flawless.
This result keeps the table wide open. The Cayman Islands now sit two points behind Bermuda with the same number of games played. If the pattern continues, the top two could end level on points and we will need a tiebreaker to separate them.
