About the player
Bernard grew up at Atlético Mineiro. After a loan spell at Democrata-SL to get playing time, he came back to Belo Horizonte and good enough by 2012 to be named the Campeonato Brasileiro's best newcomer. A year later he lifted the Copa Libertadores with Atlético and made the South American Team of the Year.
Shakhtar Donetsk paid a reported €25 million for him in 2013, and Bernard with five years of near-constant silverware: three Ukrainian Premier League titles, three Ukrainian Cups and three Super Cups. Everton signed him on a free transfer once his Shakhtar contract ran out, and he stayed on Merseyside for three seasons before a move to Sharjah in the UAE and then Panathinaikos, where he added a Greek Cup in 2023–24.
Though right-footed, he built his game on the left wing.
In 2024, more than a decade after leaving for Ukraine, Bernard returned to Atlético Mineiro on a free transfer, back at the club where his career began.
