Carles Gil

Carles Gil arrived at New England Revolution in January 2019 for a club-record fee of $2 million, and within a year he had won the MLS Newcomer of the Year award. He had come through a longer road to get there: the Valencia native joined that club's academy at the age of five, worked his way through Valencia B, and had a loan spell at Elche that ended with promotion to La Liga. His senior debut for Valencia's first team followed in 2014, before a move to Aston Villa in January 2015 for a fee reported between £3.2 million and £3.25 million. Loan spells and a permanent transfer to Deportivo de La Coruña came next, and he stayed there until January 2019, when New England came calling.

His finest season in MLS came in 2021, when he returned from an Achilles injury to win both the MLS Comeback Player of the Year award and the Landon Donovan MLS MVP Award. That year he also led the league with 18 assists and helped New England win the Supporters' Shield. He was named to the MLS Best XI in 2019 and 2021, and has been picked for the MLS All-Star team in 2022, 2023, 2025 and 2026.

Gil now holds New England Revolution's club records for assists and goal contributions. In April 2026, he became the 32nd player in MLS history to reach 50 goals and 50 assists. Earlier in his career, he earned a single cap for Spain's under-21 side in 2013.
