Gastón Olveira

Montevideo produced the goalkeeper, but Paraguayan football made him: Gastón Olveira spent his formative years at River Plate in the Uruguayan capital, debuting for the club in April 2014 and going on to make 106 appearances in the Primera División before a place in the 2019 Team of the Year confirmed he had become one of the league's reference figures at his position.

The move that reshaped his career came in January 2021, when Olimpia took him on loan. Within that single season he helped the Paraguayan club lift both the Copa Paraguay and the Supercopa Paraguay, evidence enough for Olimpia to buy half of his registration rights at the end of the year and make the transfer permanent in January 2022. He signed for four years and has since gone further still: Olimpia extended his contract in May 2025 through to the end of 2029, and under him in goal the club has won three Primera División titles, in the 2022 Clausura, the 2024 Clausura and the 2026 Apertura.

2024 was his individual peak in Paraguay: he was named the APF's best goalkeeper of the season, best footballer of the season, and Player of the People. With Uruguay's under-22 side he had already won gold at the Pan American Games. The identity switch that followed surprised few who had watched his rise at Olimpia — early in 2026 Olveira completed his naturalisation as a Paraguayan citizen, and on 27 March he made his senior debut for Paraguay in a friendly against Greece. He was subsequently included in the country's preliminary 55-man squad for the World Cup.
