Nobody in Danish hockey follows Aalborg the way Odense does.

The club under that name has existed since 2012, which is a detail worth pausing on before it reads as a young operation. The team itself goes back to 1967, when it started as the ice hockey section of Aalborg Boldspilklub. It became Aalborg Ishockey Klub after a 1997 merger with IK Aalborg, moved its licence back to AaB in 2003 once money ran short, and then folded outright at the end of the 2011/12 season. Private investors led by Magnus Kjøller bought the licence that June and put the Pirates crest on it instead.

Ronny Larsen belongs to the club across both eras: his number 13 is retired, and the Danish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame took him in during 2023. Julian Jakobsen, who came through the club's own academy, captained the side to the 2018 title — the first championship in 37 years. Two more followed, in 2022 and 2023, alongside cup wins in 2018 and 2022.

Nikolaj Ehlers, who grew up in Aalborg before his NHL career, became majority shareholder in 2025 after the club again hit financial trouble.
