Bulgaria Women

June 2026 gave Bulgaria Women something they had not had before: a win. Facing Serbia at the Vasil Levski National Sports Academy in Sofia, they came through by seven runs, the single victory on a record otherwise made up of defeats since the side first took the field in October 2024.

That first assignment came against Serbia, though the T20 international side is more often dated to the series against Greece later the same month, played away in Corfu and lost. A 0-3 series defeat to Estonia in May 2025 followed, then a fourth-place finish at the Women's T20 Quadrangular Series that July, where a third-place playoff against Serbia also went the wrong way. Serbia, Greece, Estonia, Turkey and Austria make up the circuit Bulgaria now plays into most seasons.

There is no ground built for the sport behind the team. Matches are staged on the bitumen courts of the Vasil Levski National Sports Academy, a multi-purpose complex in Sofia rather than a cricket venue in its own right, and it was there that the win over Serbia arrived. The women's team itself is barely two years old, one of the newer national sides in the region.

The name most attached to what progress there has been is Detelina Ruynekova, the captain. An all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls off-breaks, she holds the team's benchmark innings of 86 and its best bowling return of 5 for 18.
