Serbia go into the rest of 2026 as regional Twenty20 champions, having taken the ECN Balkan Cup T20IW in Sofia with three wins out of three. That result marks the clearest gain yet for a side that has spent four years working its way up from the bottom of a small circuit of Balkan nations.

The team only came together properly in 2022. Captain Sladjana Matijevic has said in interviews that earlier attempts to put out a women's national side had failed to hold, and it took until that year for a full squad to form and take the field. Their first Women's Twenty20 International followed on 10 September 2022, against Greece at the Women's Balkan Cup in Romania, where Serbia finished third after beating Romania in the play-off. Cricket itself is barely two decades old in the country, growing out of informal gatherings in 2007 before the first clubs were set up the following year.

Progress since has been step by step rather than sudden. A third-place finish at the 2025 Women's T20 Quadrangular Series in Bulgaria, sealed with an eight-wicket win over the hosts in the play-off, came before the Balkan Cup title arrived this year. Matijevic remains the team's central figure with bat and ball, while Nadja Nojic, a former captain, continues to lead the bowling attack she once ran the side from.

Home matches are played on a ground shared with no fixed capacity on record, at Lisicji Jarak in Belgrade, which has already staged fixtures against Bulgaria and Cyprus. It is Bulgaria who have emerged as the team to beat in the region: the two sides have met repeatedly in play-offs and finals over the past two seasons, and Sofia has become the venue where Serbia's biggest results have been won.
