Gornyak Rudny

The Sokolov-Sarbai Mining and Processing Plant put its own name on the venture in 1958, when engineer A. Leskin, quartermaster N. Kozhin and director N. Sandrigaylo set up a works team in Rudny to give the combine's workforce a hockey side of its own. The club has changed its name more than once since — it traded through several titles before settling, from 2003, on Gornyak, the Russian word for miner, a direct nod to the ore pits that funded it.

The Rudny Ice Palace, where Gornyak plays in black, red and white, has never had to hold more than the club has needed of it. Its rivalry with Kulager of Petropavlovsk, contested as the North Kazakhstan derby, is the fixture the city marks on its calendar.
