Nomad Astana

Alexander Vysotsky ran the bench for seven years, from 2013 until 2020. Players such as Artemi Lakiza, Roman Starchenko, Dmitri Malgin, Adil Beketaev and Nikita Boyarkin all passed through on their way to or from Barys Astana. Nomad was set up in 2007 as Barys Astana-2, entered the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship the following season, and only took the name Nomad in May 2013.

The championship itself has come in three waves — 2016–17, 2022–23 and 2025–26 — with runner-up finishes in between, in 2010–11, 2018–19 and 2023–24. The one title that reached beyond Kazakhstan came in the IIHF Continental Cup in 2023–24, where Nomad beat Cardiff Devils and Herning Blue Fox in the final group, having lost that same final group in 2017–18.

Barys Astana carries its own rivalry with Ak Bars Kazan, the so-called Cat Derby, but Nomad's tie to its parent club runs on different terms, meeting instead as affiliates who happen to compete in the same domestic league. Home games are played at the Kazakhstan Sports Palace, a rink that holds just over 4,000 for hockey.
