Lanzarote Zonzamas Women

San Bartolomé's handball club has become a notable sporting export from the municipality. Club Balonmano Zonzamas traces its playing history to 1974, when a group of friends started throwing a ball around at the Instituto de Arrecife, and it took the Zonzamas name in 1985, after the Majo chief who once ruled the island.

The women's side has spent the past decade climbing the Spanish handball ladder in stages: the Segunda División title in 2015, the División de Honor Plata in 2021, and a first taste of the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola that same year, which ended in relegation. Winning the División de Honor Oro in 2025 has earned them a second run at the top flight for 2025/2026, this time with a squad built around imports such as Argentine goalkeeper Valentina Menucci and Paraguayan centre back Paula Fernández.

Home games are played at the Pabellón Municipal de San Bartolomé in front of crowds in the low hundreds, a scale that suits an island rivalry more than a national one — the derby against CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife matters more locally than most of the club's league fixtures. The youth setup, remembered on the island as "la generación dorada", won back-to-back Spanish junior titles in 1998 and 1999 after taking the cadet crown in 1997, and that production line is part of why a club from a town of San Bartolomé's size has kept reaching Spain's top division rather than settling into the regional game.

What Zonzamas has not yet done is survive a season in the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola once it gets there.
