Legnica

The handball section in Legnica began in a barber's chair rather than a boardroom: Mieczysław Matysiak, a local hairdresser, put together a team called Rzemieślnik in 1966, and five years later the multi-sport club Miedź Legnica absorbed it. The section only stood on its own again in 1996, was reorganised as KPR Miedź 96 Legnica in 1999, and took its current name, Siódemka Miedź Legnica, in 2009.

The club spent a decade, from 2004 to 2013, in Poland's top flight, and its best league finish, seventh place, came in the 2011/2012 season. Michał Adamuszek topped the Ekstraklasa scoring charts in 2007/2008 with 190 goals. The academy's clearest mark on the sport is the Będzikowski name: Jacek won Olympic gold, and his brothers Piotr and Jakub also came through the same youth ranks.

Legnica's fixtures against Śląsk Wrocław carry their own name, the Lower Silesian Derby, a reminder that the region's handball rivalries run along the same lines as its geography. Home games are played at the Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa, a hall that seats under a thousand.

What the club has not managed is a return to the top division since relegation in 2013.
