Biała Podlaska

The academic sports society AZS had a handball side at its Biała Podlaska branch as far back as the 1970s, but the section folded in 1979 and only came back to life in November 1986, under the wing of the physical-education college that gives the club its second name, AWF.

What followed was two decades of drifting between divisions until sponsorship from Pol-Kres arrived in 1994. AZS won the second-tier I Liga in 1997/98 and went up to the Ekstraklasa. In between, the club reached the Polish Cup Final Four three years running, from 1998 to 2000, hosting the tournament itself in the first of those.

Since then the pull has been downward rather than up — out of I Liga in 2009/10, again in 2012/13, and again in 2014/15 — and the 2025/26 season finds AZS in the Liga Centralna, well below where it stood at the turn of the century. The academic side of the name has kept producing results of its own: eight national titles in the Academic Championships of Poland between 1996 and 2012.

The club's own graduates have tended to leave rather than stay: Jakub Szyszko came through local side UKS Olimpia before AZS, then moved on to Górnik Zabrze and ORLEN Wisła Płock and into the national team.
