Grunwald Poznan

WKS Grunwald Poznań is a club on the western edge of the city.

The club's best years belong to a stretch that opened in 1970, when Grunwald took a bronze in the league, then a title the following season, then a Polish Cup the year after that. Two more cups followed by the end of the decade, and the side returned to the league final in 1991 before that generation moved on. Grunwald sent players into the national team during that run: Zbigniew Dybol carried a bronze medal back from the 1974 World Championship, and Henryk Rozmiarek added an Olympic bronze of his own two years later in Montreal.

What came after was a slower story. The club slipped out of the top-flight Superliga and, by the 2012–13 season, was playing in the second-tier I Liga. A decade further on it had dropped again, to the third-tier Liga Centralna, before administrative trouble at another club opened a route back to the I Liga for 2024–25. Rafał Walczak, who played for the club before taking charge of it, has carried much of that period on his shoulders, and Krzysztof Martyński is the name supporters now point to when asked who the modern side belongs to. Anyone watching a Derby Poznania against MKS Poznań, or the Wielkopolski derby with Leszno, still finds Grunwald's blue and white in it.
