Martin

Martin sits under the Malá Fatra mountains in northern Slovakia, and the club went by Hutník and later Martimex as its industrial sponsors changed, before Slávia Martin, its founding name from 1932, became simply HC Martin.

The Czechoslovak league years asked more of the club than the trophy case ever showed: three runner-up finishes in the old Slovak National Hockey League through the 1980s and into 1991–92, seasons that built a reputation without quite closing it out with a title. The club's one truly outsized result — winning the IIHF Continental Cup in 2008–09.

The town's fiercest fixture is the short trip to Žilina, played out against Vlci as the Derby o Turiec. Michal Beran captained the side for years; Richard Pánik came up through the same youth ranks before his path led to the NHL and clubs like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals.

Martin now plays in the second-tier Slovak 1. Liga, a division it topped once already, in 1999–2000. The Zimný štadión Martin still holds 4,200 for a game night.
