Nový Jičín sits in the Moravian-Silesian foothills, a town whose sporting identity has run through basketball rather than football since the local club split off from TJ Nový Jičín on April 24, 1990. The Sportovní hala on Novosady has been the stage for a run of results well beyond what a town this size usually produces.

The peak came in 1998/99, when Nový Jičín took the national league title, backed by five Czech Cups won across the 1990s and 2000s and a Central European Basketball League crown in 2009/10. Runner-up finishes piled up alongside the silverware — eight of them in the top flight — evidence of a club that competed at the summit for the best part of two decades rather than catching one good season.

That era ended in financial trouble. Nový Jičín withdrew from the top division after the 2010/11 season and fell as far as the regional fourth tier, where it stayed from 2012 to 2015 before winning promotion back to the second-tier 1. Liga in 2016. The rebuild leaned on entrepreneur Daneš Zátorský, whose backing kept the club going through the lower divisions. Derby weekends against BK Opava and NH Ostrava still carry the old rivalry, framed locally as Moravian-Silesian occasions.

Of the players who wore the orange and black through the successful years, Jiří Okáč is the name most associated with the club's national-team pedigree, part of a generation that carried Nový Jičín from a provincial split-off to a fixture of the Czech basketball map.
