Every derby in Vale do Ave that involves Ginásio Clube de Santo Tirso ends up measured against FC Gaia, the club that shares the region, since neither side has ever attached a proper name to the meetings.

Santo Tirso's own place in Andebol 1 has been won and lost more than once. The clearest example came in the 2013–14 season, when the team took the Campeonato Nacional da 2ª Divisão and went up to the top flight for 2014–15, finishing runners-up in the same competition five years earlier, in 2008–09.

The clearest name to come out of that period is José Rebelo, who came through at GCST before playing for FC Porto and FC Gaia — the same club now cast as Santo Tirso's rival — and later turned to beach handball, where he was picked for the All-Star Team of the EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup 2024 as best defender, before stepping away to study sports medicine.

Ginásio Clube de Santo Tirso plays home matches in a municipal pavilion holding around 2,000, in blue and white. The junior side matched the seniors' achievement in its own age group, winning the national second division title in 2013.
