Marítimo did the opposite: after going down 39-31 in Sweden in 2024-25, they won the return fixture at home 35-33, a scoreline that still left them short on aggregate but did not concede either.

The section did not start life under the Marítimo badge at all. It grew out of Académico Funchal, founded on 29 September 1998, and only took on the parent club's identity in 2016, when it became Académico Marítimo Madeira Andebol SAD through a partnership with the football club founded back in 1910. The merger was completed in 2023, when the handball side folded fully into C.S. Marítimo and became its official handball department.

What it inherited from that football club was more than a name. The green and red kit, the Verde-Rubros nickname, even the local rivalry with Nacional da Madeira in what is known on the island as the Madeira Derby — all carried across from the football side. The team plays out of the Pavilhão do Marítimo, also called Pavilhão de Santo António, a 1,000-seat hall inside the wider Complexo Desportivo do Marítimo.

A first Portuguese league title, or a Taça de Portugal, has so far stayed out of reach.
