The club traces back to the East German sports system, formed as SC Aufbau Magdeburg on 1 March 1955. Ten years later, in July 1965, it was renamed SC Magdeburg, the name it carried through the rest of the GDR era and kept after re-registering as a members' association in 1990.
Under the old East German league, Magdeburg simply had no equal: ten championships between 1970 and 1991. That domestic strength travelled abroad early — the European Cup of Champions came to the GETEC Arena's predecessor twice, in 1978 and 1981.
Alfreð Gíslason, in charge from 1998 to 2003, was the coach who rebuilt the side for that transition.
The more recent record has been the strongest since the GDR years: Bundesliga titles in 2022, 2024 and 2026, the DHB-Pokal in 2024, and the EHF Champions League regained in 2023 and 2025 under Bennet Wiegert, in charge since 2022.
