Adam Larsson left Skellefteå for the National Hockey League and played in Edmonton, New Jersey and Vancouver, the kind of departure that the club's academy has come to expect from itself rather than treat as an exception. Marcus Pettersson followed a similar road out of the same system, through Anaheim and on to Pittsburgh.

The club itself began at Café Norden on 1 July 1921, when a group of members broke away from Skellefteå IF after being refused a bandy section. They had meant to register as an IFK club but took the AIK name instead, and with it, from 1952, the black and yellow that still colours the town's rink. That rink, the Skellefteå Kraft Arena, holds 5,801 for hockey.

Domestically the record reads five Swedish Championships, in 1978, 2013, 2014, 2024 and 2026, with Rögle BK beaten in the two most recent finals. The rivalry that matters most, though, runs north rather than south: games against Luleå HF are known as Norrderbyt, the Northern Derby, and carry a weight the championship record alone does not explain.

Europe has been a longer, harder education. Skellefteå AIK has reached the Champions Hockey League playoffs in every season since the competition began in 2014–15, through quarter-final exits and a semi-final loss to Färjestad BK in that first year, before finally reaching the final in 2023–24 — and losing it 3-2 to Genève-Servette on 20 February 2024, a defeat that came a few months before the club settled the matter at home with a domestic title instead.

Larsson remains the name Skellefteå points to first: the defenceman who went through its system and kept going.
