Sparta Sarpsborg

Ice hockey in Sarpsborg grew out of a broader athletics society, Idrettslaget Sparta, formed in the town in November 1928. The team waited even longer for a proper home: Sparta Amfi, which opened in 1963, was the first indoor ice rink built anywhere in Norway, and it was rebuilt in 2006–2007 and again in 2012, to reach its current 3,900 seats.

For much of the 2000s the club played under the name Sparta Warriors, adopted in 2004, before reverting to Sparta Sarpsborg in 2020. Money trouble has shadowed the operation more than once: a near-collapse in 1986 forced a split of the sports departments and a rebrand to Sparta Hockey, and a full bankruptcy in 1995 led supporters to rebuild the side as IHK Sparta Sarpsborg. Per Christian Knold remains the club's all-time leading scorer.

Three national titles carry the club's history: 1984, 1989 and 2011, with 2011 doubling as a regular-season championship as well. A fourth trophy nearly came in 2009, when Sparta reached the final only to fall to Vålerenga. Jonas Holøs, once a player for the club, now sits in the head coach's chair.
