Almtuna

One season decided how Almtuna would be remembered in the top flight, and it went badly. Promoted to Sweden's premier division for 1962/63 after winning Division I, the Uppsala side finished bottom of its group, lost the qualification series and went back down before the campaign could turn into a habit. It has not been back since, and that single winter remains the club's only appearance among Sweden's elite.

What followed instead was permanence one level down. Almtuna holds the record for the most seasons played in Sweden's second tier, 64 in total, moving between names as the division itself was renamed — Division I, then Allsvenskan, then Hockeyettan. A run to the qualification series for the Elitserien in 2009/10, where the club finished fifth, came closest to repeating 1962 without quite managing it.

The club has made its name since as a producer rather than a collector of trophies, running a certified hockey school that has sent players such as Marcus Ragnarsson and Tony Mårtensson into the NHL and onto World Championship rosters. Matches against Brynäs carry the weight of the Upplandsderbyt, and for thirteen years, between 1987 and 2000, the team even played under a different name, Uppsala/AIS, before reverting to Almtuna IS.

None of that was on the agenda in August 1932, when the organisation was formed not around a rink but around football, bandy and table tennis. Ice hockey only joined the programme in 1947, and it took until the 1980s for the other sports to fall away and leave the club that plays today in yellow and black.
