Wybrzeże Gdańsk

Handball in Gdańsk runs through Torus Wybrzeże Gdańsk now. That rebuilding followed a genuine break: the team had been folded into AZS-AWFiS Gdańsk in 2003.

What came before is the part worth dwelling on. Between 1966 and 2001 Wybrzeże won the Polish Superliga ten times, and twice went all the way to the final of the European Cup, losing to Metaloplastik Šabac in 1986 and to SKA Minsk the year after.

Marcin Lijewski came through the club during that second title run, between 1996 and 2001, before going on to a coaching career; Artur Siódmiak is remembered simply as the club's own. Robert Zawada, who also played there, became the first Polish handballer to reach a hundred caps for the national team.

Home games are played at ERGO Arena, built for over 11,000 — a step up from the far smaller HWS AWFiS hall the team used before the arena opened. The closest rival remains MMTS Kwidzyn, and games between the two are billed locally as the Pomerania Derby.
