Yeni Malatyaspor spent five seasons in the Süper Lig.
The story before that had a cleaner shape. Founded in 1986 as Malatya Belediyespor and renamed Yeni Malatyaspor in 2010, the club won the TFF Third League title in 1998–99, the TFF Second League in 2014–15, then a runners-up finish in the TFF First League in 2016–17 that sent it up to the Süper Lig for the first time. That top-flight run, from 2017 to 2022, is what the club will be measured against for a while yet.
Malatya knows the club by its colours as much as its name — yellow, black and red, and "The Red and Blacks" as a nickname worn more often than any other.
February 2023 is the date that sits apart from the rest. The earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria killed the club's player Ahmet Eyüp Türkaslan, and Yeni Malatyaspor withdrew from that season's TFF First League altogether. Among the names to have come through since, Emirhan İlkhan went from the academy straight to Beşiktaş and on to Torino.
The New Malatya Stadium holds 25,745. This season, that many seats will be watching Third League football.
