About

The **CONCACAF W Gold Cup** stands as a separate continental entity for women's football, distinct from the older **CONCACAF W Championship**. Announced in August 2021 as part of a strategic revamp, the tournament was designed to increase the number of competitive matches for national teams in the region. The inaugural edition took place in 2024 in the United States, featuring twelve teams, including eight from CONCACAF and four invited guests from CONMEBOL. The United States secured the first title by defeating Brazil in the final.

Qualification for the 2024 edition, known as the "Road to CONCACAF W Gold Cup," divided 34 member associations into three leagues based on FIFA rankings. League A contained the top teams, with group winners Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica qualifying directly. Runners-up from League A and winners from League B advanced to a preliminary round of play-offs held on February 17, 2024. In these matches, Puerto Rico defeated Haiti 1–0, El Salvador beat Guatemala 3–1, and the Dominican Republic won against Guyana 1–0. These three victors joined the direct qualifiers and automatic entrants, the USA and Canada, to complete the twelve-team field. League C winners did not progress to the main tournament.

The competition operates independently of the W Championship, which remains the primary qualifier for the FIFA Women's World Cup and the Summer Olympics. While the W Championship serves as the World Cup qualifier for the 2026 cycle, the W Gold Cup is scheduled to return in 2029. The 2024 tournament utilized a unique knockout stage structure where quarterfinal matchups were determined by ranking the eight advancing teams one through eight based on group stage performance. The event is held every four years.
