About

The Ghana FA Cup, running under its current commercial title the MTN FA Cup, operates as the premier knockout tournament in Ghanaian football. Founded in 1958 by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the competition sits directly below the Ghana Premier League in the domestic hierarchy, acting as the primary feeder to continental play. The winner secures a berth in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Entry into the tournament is open to all registered clubs, though the structure is defined by the inclusion of the 18 Ghana Premier League sides in the Round of 64. These top-flight teams join 46 victors from regional preliminary rounds to determine the path to the final. The format is strictly single-elimination; there are no group stages or second legs to dilute the outcome of any fixture.

Historical naming conventions reflect the commercial evolution of the sport. The event began life as the Aspro Cup in the late 1950s before becoming the ABC FA Cup between 1993 and 1998. After a hiatus lasting from 2002 to 2010, it adopted the MTN FA Cup identity, which has persisted since the 2010/2011 season.

Accra Hearts of Oak holds the record for success within the competition, claiming 12 titles. Asante Kotoko follows in second place with nine victories. In the most recent campaign, Nations FC secured the trophy after defeating Dreams FC in the 2025–26 final.

The tournament is distinct from the Ghana Super Cup, which features a single match between the league champion and the FA Cup winner, and the Ghana Premier League, which determines the national champion through a round-robin system.
