About
The FA Youth Cup, officially the Football Association Youth Challenge Cup, stands as a knockout tournament for Under-18 sides in England. Organised by The Football Association (FA), it was established in 1952 following a proposal by Sir Joe Richards. The competition operates independently of the standard league pyramid, meaning there is no promotion or relegation involved. While the senior FA Cup draws from across the entire football structure, this edition is reserved for professional club academies.
The format has evolved significantly over time. Originally, all stages featured two-legged ties, including the final. Recent reforms have altered this approach; the final is now a single match, and replays have been removed from the competition entirely, with draws decided by extra time and penalties. However, the quarter-finals and semi-finals continue to use two-legged fixtures. Non-league teams from tiers seven to ten must navigate qualifying rounds before 'Proper' rounds open to Football League clubs.
Manchester United holds the record for most victories, with eleven titles. Chelsea follows with nine, while Arsenal, Manchester City, and Aston Villa each have five. The 2024–25 season marked the 73rd edition of the event, with Aston Villa claiming the title after defeating Manchester City 3–1 at Villa Park. Age restrictions are strict: players must be between 15 and 18 years old on August 31.
The tournament has produced notable moments in English football history. The 1998–99 final saw West Ham United win 9–0 on aggregate, featuring Joe Cole. The 2021–22 final attracted a record attendance of 67,492 at Old Trafford. This structure ensures a focused pathway for young talent, distinct from the open nature of the senior cup competition.
