The **Northern Super League** stands as the premier professional women's football competition in Canada. It operates at the highest level of the national pyramid, sanctioned by Canada Soccer as a Level 1 entity. The league serves as the domestic counterpart to the men's Canadian Premier League, though it distinguishes itself by being exclusively women's professional soccer.
Founded by Project 8 Sports, Inc., the competition launched its inaugural season in April 2025. It utilizes a franchise model with no promotion or relegation, ensuring stability for its six charter clubs. These include AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild, Halifax Tides, Montreal Roses, Ottawa Rapid, and Vancouver Rise. The season structure features a 25-game round-robin format where each team plays every other club five times.
Competitive success is determined through a playoff system. The top four teams advance to two-legged semifinals based on aggregate score, culminating in a single-match championship final. The winners receive the Diana B. Matheson Cup. Vancouver Rise won the inaugural title, defeating AFC Toronto in the final.
The league is governed by a private entity rather than a club-owned consortium, setting it apart from the men's counterpart established in 2019. Financial regulations include a salary cap of $1.6 million per club. The competition attracted significant support in its first year, with over 275,000 tickets sold during the debut season.
