The Belgian Super Cup operates as an annual invitational fixture, currently branded as the Volkswagen Supercup. Organized jointly by the Pro League and the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA), the event serves as a curtain-raiser to the domestic campaign. The competition sits independently of the league pyramid, meaning there is no promotion or relegation attached to its outcome. Participation is determined strictly by prior domestic performance rather than qualification games.
The match pits the reigning Belgian Pro League champion against the winner of the Belgian Cup. A specific rule governs scenarios where a single club achieves the domestic double; in such cases, the runner-up of the Belgian Cup assumes the second spot in the final. While the format is typically a single encounter, the 1987 edition was played over two legs. Historical irregularities have punctuated the schedule, including the cancellation of the 1989 and 2020 editions, alongside a 2006 final halted at half-time due to heavy rain and replayed subsequently.
Club Brugge stands as the most successful entity in the tournament's history, having claimed the trophy eighteen times. The current holder is Club Brugge, who secured the title by defeating Union Saint-Gilloise 2–1 in the 2025 final. The competition is distinct from the Belgian Pro League and the Belgian Cup through its participant criteria and single-match structure. It does not include the league runner-up, unlike many other super cups that may feature alternative participants.
