Llaneros edge Quindío in penalty drama to reach Colombian Cup quarter-finals
Llaneros and Quindío drew 1:1 in normal time before Llaneros won the penalty shootout in the Round of 16 of the Colombian Cup on Tuesday evening. J. Lloreda opened the scoring with a penalty in the tenth minute, but Y. Mena levelled for the visitors just before half-time. L. Miranda was sent off for Quindío on 45+1 minutes, leaving them with ten men for extra time.
The match turned after Miranda's dismissal, though neither side could find a winner in regulation. Lloreda had already received a yellow card in the twenty-sixth minute for his role in the opening penalty. Quindío made three changes in the sixty-first minute, bringing on S. Orozco, S. Roa and B. Chury. Llaneros responded with three substitutions of their own at the seventy-minute mark.
Extra time produced nothing, and the shootout began at 120+1 minutes. Llaneros scored their first four penalties, while Quindío missed two of theirs. Lloreda was substituted on 81 minutes, and Ibarguen picked up a yellow card for Quindío on 82. The shootout stretched to five rounds, with Llaneros converting four and missing one, Quindío scoring two and missing two.
Llaneros now advance to the quarter-finals. They sit second in the standings with nine points from four games, three wins and one defeat. The hosts have shown inconsistency recently, losing their last two outings against Independiente Medellín and Millonarios. Quindío, meanwhile, had been building momentum with consecutive wins against Unión Magdalena and Envigado.
By then, the result meant Llaneros maintained their position in the competition. The penalty shootout was decided after ten kicks, with the hosts winning 4-2 on penalties. Quindío's red card earlier in the match had shifted the balance, but they fought back to level before extra time.
