Egersund took all three points away from Strømsgodset with a 2-0 victory in the first division regular season. The visitors had already shown they could convert their chances in recent weeks, beating Sandnes Ulf 2-0 on their last outing. By then you could see they were not going to give up the ball and hit on the break.
And here's the thing about the opening goal. J. Ekeland found the net in the 18th minute before H. Stengel missed a penalty just three minutes later. That miss changed everything, because Strømsgodset suddenly had to chase the game while staying compact at the back. The visitors switched off at the back for a moment, but then had one foot in the next phase of play.
The second goal came after the break when N. Tornvig struck in the 47th minute. Strømsgodset had made a substitution on the half-hour mark with S. Pingel coming on, but it did not shift the momentum. To be fair, the hosts threw everything at it, though they gave nothing away at the back.
Egersund brought on N. Tornvig and F. P. Vilaseca Ardraa together in the 78th minute, while Strømsgodset responded with H. Kleppa and G. Wikheim. The visitors also pulled J. Gregersen off after 79 minutes. By then the result was beyond doubt, and you could see the tactical setup had worked perfectly.
Strømsgodset held 64 per cent of possession and registered nine corners, but their 12 shots off target told the story. Egersund managed just three shots off target with two on target, yet they took their chances. The table goes out of the window in these games when you do not convert.
The victory moved Egersund closer to the top half, while Strømsgodset remain fourth with 42 points from 21 games. The visitors sit eighth with 28 points, but this result showed they can compete with anyone. Strømsgodset have not kept a clean sheet in their last two outings, and now they face a tough run.
