Slovan Liberec moved into second place in the Czech League after a narrow 1-0 victory over Zlín on Saturday evening. The result leaves the visitors unbeaten in six matches while the hosts remain winless from the same number of games. Lukáš Mašek's second-half strike proved decisive when the match needed something to break the pattern.
The opening exchanges were cagey, with both sides feeling each other out. Zlín's Daniel Šmiga went into the book in the thirty-sixth minute, and Miloš Kopečný followed shortly before the break. By then Liberec were already showing more intent, probing down the flanks with crosses that rarely found their mark.
And here's the thing about this kind of game — the atmosphere shifts when someone finally commits. Mašek's goal in the sixty-fourth minute changed everything, even if the visitors had been the more threatening side all afternoon. They created three big chances compared to Zlín's single opportunity, and the difference showed in the final tally.
To be fair, Zlín did not lack for effort. They made 275 passes against 464 from their opponents, attempted 23 tackles to 26, and won 15 aerial duels apiece. But they could only manage one shot on target from five attempts, while Liberec registered four from ten. Shots accuracy sat at 20 per cent for the hosts and 24 for the visitors.
Substitutions came thick and fast after the interval, with eight changes between the two sides in the space of forty minutes. Milan Lexa and David Grygera were among the first to come off, while Alexandr Bužek and A. Buzek both featured in the ninetieth minute for Liberec. Yellow cards continued to accumulate, with Marián Pišoja and Lukas Bartosak both cautioned late on.
The table tells its own story now. Zlín sit at the bottom with zero points from six defeats, having lost their last five matches including a 2-3 defeat to Plzeň and a 1-3 loss to Sparta Prague. Liberec, meanwhile, move up to second with thirteen points, their only blemish a 0-1 away defeat to Teplice earlier in August.
