Gabriel Jesus completes deadline-day move to Barcelona

Gabriel Jesus has completed his transfer from Arsenal to Barcelona, revealing at his presentation that he accepted a significant salary reduction to facilitate the deal.

Barcelona had spent the summer chasing Julian Alvarez, but Atletico Madrid never budged. With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres both gone, Hansi Flick's side faced the prospect of going into the season without a recognised centre-forward. Jesus arrived instead, on a three-year contract that ties him to Camp Nou through 2028-29.

Barcelona and Arsenal settled on a package worth up to €15m, including a sell-on clause. Barca sources, cited by The Athletic, put the initial fee at €10m plus €4.5m in add-ons.

Jesus said Barcelona's interest only reached him a week before the move was announced. He had been close to joining the club a decade ago, before Manchester City won that race instead.

Two years at Arsenal had turned difficult. Jesus tore his ACL in 2025 and, even once fit again, found Mikel Arteta preferring Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres ahead of him. He says he is now fully recovered.

Mundo Deportivo reported that Barcelona's move for Jesus began at least a week before it became public, running in parallel with the Alvarez pursuit as a fallback plan for Flick's front line. English doctors who had treated his knees were consulted and gave the club their assurances.

With Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi already added to the attack this summer, Jesus gives Flick a recognised number nine to lead a forward line that had looked short of one. Missing out on Alvarez leaves a gap in Barcelona's ambitions this window, but the champions head into the season with their attack restocked all the same.
