Man United not planning to sack Michael Carrick in break

Manchester United do not plan to sack Michael Carrick during the international break, according to Ben Jacobs and Football Insider.

Carrick, 45, took the job permanently in May. United are 12th in the Premier League with two wins in seven games in all competitions. The 1-1 draw with Fulham followed the collapse against Brighton in the Carabao Cup, and Gary Neville called part of the Fulham display "the worst 15 minutes I've ever seen".

Jacobs said on the Market Madness podcast that Carrick remains supported through the break. United are not believed to be preparing a September dismissal, although the club's summer spending reached €222.7m and results have not matched it.

Football Insider says the board is counting on the record Carrick built as interim manager. He won 11 of 16 games in charge last season, and United finished third and qualified for the Champions League. The outlet's reporter said on the Transfer Insider podcast that Carrick has "a lot of credit in the bank" and that no knee-jerk reaction is expected.

Cost is part of the argument. Carrick is the third permanent manager since INEOS's takeover was made official in February 2024. Erik ten Hag and his staff reportedly received £15m after being sacked in October 2024, and United faced a £16.7m bill to remove Ruben Amorim and his coaches in January 2026.

"They can't really afford more upheaval after numerous managerial changes over the seasons," the Football Insider reporter said, adding that the club will hope Carrick can turn things around "in the next few weeks after this international break".

This may mean the first league fixtures after the break carry more weight than the backing suggests. Support that rests on last season's record and on the cost of another dismissal would not necessarily survive another run of poor results.
