Mbappe scores twice as Real Madrid thrash Rayo Vallecano

Kylian Mbappe scored twice in Real Madrid's 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano, taking his tally to six goals in five La Liga games this season and moving level at the top of the scoring charts with Raphinha and Rayo's own Sergio Camello.

He opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, sending the keeper the wrong way. Minutes later he turned provider, teeing up Alvaro Carreras for Madrid's second. Just before half-time he curled an effort against the post that would have made it a personal double sooner. He did not have to wait long: in injury time, played through by Arda Guler against a Rayo defence pushed up in search of an equaliser, Mbappe picked out the far corner for his second of the night.

The two goal contributions also carried a wider significance. Across club and Country, Mbappe has now been involved in 600 career goals — 441 scored, 159 assisted. In La Liga alone he has made exactly as many appearances for Real Madrid as he has goal contributions: 70 games, 61 goals and nine assists.

Jude Bellingham added a third before the break, his own third goal of the campaign, with Vinicius Junior providing the assist. Vinicius has otherwise had a quieter start in front of goal, with just one league strike so far this season. Jose Mourinho was asked about the Brazilian's form.

Raphinha still holds a game in hand on Mbappe in the scoring race, with Barcelona facing Levante on Sunday.
