Atlético Madrid beat Real Madrid 2:1 as Huijsen is sent off

Atlético Madrid beat Real Madrid 2:1 in the derby at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday, and Real's Dean Huijsen was sent off early in the second half for holding Giuliano Simeone by the arm inside the box.

The foul began outside the area and continued inside it, and the referee pointed to the spot. Grimaldo converted the penalty. Simeone, the 11-goal forward who has been at Atlético since September 2024, also set up the second goal with a cross that Marc Cucurella let run past him. Atlético led 2:0 before Antonio Rüdiger pulled one back late on, having come on for Arda Güler after the red card.

The first half was quiet until about the 20th minute. Atlético then went after Real's left flank, with Simeone and Lee Kang-in working against Cucurella. Güler hit the crossbar area from distance just before the break, and Jan Oblak kept it out. Cucurella made three tackles and was beaten twice, according to Euro-Football.ru's ratings, which gave him 3.0 out of 10.

Huijsen had played 36 accurate passes in the first half and lost almost no duels. The sending-off rules him out of the next league match.

It was Matchday 7 of La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti has now gone 13 years without beating Diego Simeone.

The result leaves Barcelona ahead of both Madrid sides going into the international break. Huijsen's suspension leaves Real without a starter for the next fixture.
