Cristiano Ronaldo named in Jorge Jesus's first Portugal squad

Jorge Jesus named his first Portugal squad on Friday, and Cristiano Ronaldo is in it.

The 72-year-old takes charge for the opening round of the 2026/27 Nations League, with four fixtures inside three weeks: Wales at home in Alvalade on 24 September, then away to Norway on 27 September, away to Denmark on 1 October, and back at home to Norway on 4 October to close the window.

The list largely follows the shape left behind by Roberto Martínez. Ronaldo, still on the books at Al Nassr, keeps his place alongside João Félix, also of Al Nassr, and Gonçalo Ramos of Paris Saint-Germain up front. PSG in fact supply three names to the squad — Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and João Neves — while Nuno Tavares, now at Lazio after his spell at Marseille, also gets the nod at left-back.

In goal, Jesus picked FC Porto's Diogo Costa, 26, alongside Rui Silva of Sporting and Benfica's Samuel Soares, 24., with Diogo Dalot, João Cancelo and Gonçalo Inácio also named among the defenders. Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Palhinha and Rúben Neves fill out a, and Rafael Leão, Pedro Neto, Francisco Conceição and Francisco Trincão.

Portugal sit second in their World Cup qualifying group on five points from three matches, with Ronaldo their top scorer on three goals and Neto and Félix having chipped in one each. Norway, the visitors on 4 October, sit second in their own group on six points, built largely on Erling Haaland's seven goals — a reminder, ahead of the Ullevaal Stadion leg, of the kind of opponent Jesus's back line will face twice inside a week.
